Harps
My favourite instrument is the Harp and particular the wire strung Celtic Harp. I have being playing this instrument for many years now starting with a small knee Harp with 24 strings made by Oakwood instruments of Leeds which is strung with steel wire. I then progressed on to a larger Harp, seen in the picture here, which was made by Pilgrim Harps of Kent. This Harp has 32 strings and is strung with a mixture of brass and phosphor bronze giving the instrument a wonderful clear bell like tone. The harp is made from sycamore, stands about a metre high and is fitted with semi-tone levers.
With the harp being strung with wire I have had to learn to dampen the strings as I play to avoid discord since some of the strings, especially the bass ones, could ring for several minutes.
The latest addition to my collection of harps is a gut strung harp, also made by Pilgrim Harps, with 34 strings.
